What was the Vietnam War?
The Vietnam War was one of the several military conflicts that occurred during the Cold War. The Vietnam War began on November 1, 1955 and ended on April 30, 1975 with the Fall of Saigon. The war was fought between North Vietnam (under Ho Chi Minh) and its allies against South Vietnam (under Ngo Dinh Diem) and its principal ally, the United States. The rise of Ho Chi Minh ignited the start of the Vietnam War in which it would be a fight to reunify Vietnam and spread communism.
What was the Outcome of the War?
By 1969, the United States had 50,000 military personnel in Vietnam to fight in the war. Overtime, though Americans began to despise the war. Their arguments led to bitter divisions among themselves thus forcing the United States to withdraw its troops from Vietnam in 1973. After Communist Forces under Ho Chi Minh had taken over Saigon, the war had ended. North Vietnam had taken over South Vietnam and turned the whole country communist. The following year, Vietnam was unified and became known as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Nonetheless, the cost of the war was great. More than 3 million people died as a result of the war; 58,000 of them were Americans while more than half were Vietnamese Civilians.
FALLEN ANGELS
Fallen Angels is a story about a teenager named Richard Perry who risks his life to join the Vietnam War because he needs money to go to college. Throughout the story, he meets numerous people and goes on various patrols. After witnessing the death of Jenkins and Lieutenant Carroll, Gearhart takes over. The Viet Cong invade a village in which Perry ends up shooting a Viet Cong. Overtime, tensions between the Americans and their Vietnamese allies grow; one day during patrol, as the Americans and their South Vietnamese allies are about to evacuate from the village, they get into a dispute and the South Vietnamese end up surrounding the Americans. When American choppers see what's going on, they open fire on the Vietnamese and save the Americans. While Perry and Peewee are on a patrol in a nearby river, they discover a large squad of Viet Cong coming thus forcing them to evacuate. They accidentally get separated from their squad and end up hiding in a hole. After escaping, they search for a chopper and see Monaco sitting on the ground frozen. They soon realize the enemy soldiers were hiding in the bushes using Monaco as bait to kill them. They open fire on the enemy soldiers warning the choppers, saving Monaco , themselves, and numerous other soldiers. In the process, Perry and Peewee are wounded and taken to a hospital. They are wounded enough that they have to return back to the United States. While in the airport, they read newspapers only to discover that that the news reporters had not truly expressed the true costs of war. When they board the plane, Perry realizes that he enters civilian life when he hears a passenger on the plane ask about wine selection.
